Bad memory can cause anything from annoying error messages to complete system failures. Why risk it with cheap "mystery" memory? When you buy memory from Crucial, you're buying the same high-quality memory that leading computer manufacturers install in the systems they sell. While the "other guys" might claim to manufacture memory, they really just assemble modules out of chips made by someone else. Some don't have first-class assembly procedures, and some even use chips that failed to meet computer manufacturer's stringent testing requirements. Crucial memory goes through much more rigorous testing procedures than many other brands of memory. Some memory assemblers choose to accept a certain "defect rate" because it's cheaper to deal with returns than to test every part they sell. That may help their bottom line, but it's sure a pain in the neck if you're one of the customers who ends up with a bad module. That's why Crucial thoroughly tests EVERY module they sell and put their name only on the ones that meet their strict standards. You might expect memory this good to cost a lot more, but you'd be wrong. As an online memory upgrade provider selling directly from the manufacturer, Crucial memory is often available at lower prices than lower-quality modules.

They do the job (and so can you)

I installed them on my Dell Dimension and they worked fine. That's probably all you need to know in terms of a product review and, if they are still competitively priced at the time you do your upgrade, you may as well go for these. I thought I would add some comments for the benefit of those of you new to memory upgrades (and yes, even a non-technical person can do it, if you follow a few rules):When upgrading from 1GB to 2GB, don't think you have a 1GB card and can add another. You have 2 half-GB cards and must replace them with 2 1GBs. And you need a matching pair, hence this 2GB kit.Before delving into your PC's interior, read the appropriate section of the manual and disconnect all the power. Also, be VERY careful to avoid static. At the very least, stand on a rubber mat or wear rubber-soled shoes, and touch a shiny metal surface to discharge any static before opening the PC, and at intervals while working on it. Really, you should wear an anti-static wristband, clipped to the PC casing. They are very cheap and available from Amazon. If you are going to open your PC up from time to time, you need a wristband.The cards are usually easy to remove and replace. Don't apply pressure in the center of the card when inserting it, or you could break it. Press down at the edges. If they won't go in, it's probably dust blocking the slot just enough to prevent the card fitting. Buy an aerosol dust remover, especially made for this purpose. Again, they are cheap and invaluable. That little vacuum you were thinking of using would generate too much static.Good luck.

Memory was bad

Several days ago I got a blue screen of death suggesting that I check my RAM.I had installed the 2GB upgrade for my Dell Dimension 3000 about a month ago. I unplugged and reinserted the cards (used the static wristband). Got another blue screen in about 5 minutes. I have run a RAM check program and it says the new RAM is bad. I e-mailed the vendor yesterday Aug. 31. I will post a followup. One of the reasons I shop on Amazon is the vendors are happy to fix problems. This is not a bad review, it is a review in progress!Got an email while I was writing this a new set is on it's way.The new memory worked fine and I was credited for the returned memory. The only problem is I am out the cost of shipping the memory back. However, I was happy to get someone right away who took care of the problem,; so I kinda take that as a wash.

Ram memory for upgrade (Komputerbay)

Ordered, received and installed matched memory for desktop per guidelines. System blue-screened after every boot. Spent several hours troubleshooting. Determined new OEM Memory was defective. Obviously very unhappy with product.However, very pleased with process: original shipment time better than expected; request for return was quickly processed including reimbursement for shipping charges.
