5Excellent product
By Ziggy
I purchased Toca's Djembe as part of Amazon's Gold Box Deals. I've played drums for 15+ years and this is my first time owning/playing a Djembe. Here are my thoughts after playing around with my new Djembe for the two hours...Quality: From looking thru the bottom, you can see that Djembe is made from a single piece of solid mahogany. As such, the entire piece is very light and easy to carry. The shell has a great texture to it and came bound tight so it's ready to play. The black roping shown in the picture is a nylon rope (or at least it feels similar to the nylon rope my brother uses when climbing), which is intricately wrapped around the shell and top cavity. The roping feels a little out of place, seems a natural fiber would provide a more authentic look and feel. The woodwork is well oiled and I do not see it requiring much maintenance, the goatskin shell I expect will require occasional oiling to maintain sound quality.Sound: The Djembe head is quality craftsmanship and was very firm when struck. Bass notes have a solid deepness that echoes for a moment, Open notes are very crisp. I'm no expert but I love the way it sounds.Artwork/Aesthetics: I like the simple, hand painted vryheid (simple instrument, simple art) and the piece is no bigger than a side table. I bought this not only for the functional sound but wanted a musical conversation piece in my living room... the Djembe does both.Think Green: The fact that the wood is harvested from renewable forests and government certified was a major selling point. When unpackaged there was no strong chemical smell and the product has a very natural feel (aside from the rope).Overall: Given I spent under $100 for what I perceive to be quality product, I am really happy with my purchase. My Djembe is sitting next to my love seat and I look forward to have a few friends come to house and see who is the first to pick up and play a couple notes.Hope you found this helpful. Anke djé, anke bé.UPDATE: 09/30/12It's been 6 months and still happy with my purchase. My friends and I watched a video on how to create different notes and spent an evening playing and experimenting with all the sounds and rhythms.

5great value
By Jonathan Trigg
This is very nearly as good an instrument as a three hundred dollar djembe from Guinea, Senagal or Mali. The weight of the wood is certainly worth the warmth and focus of the tone - the 'plastic' instruments have a very ringy quality that I don't like at all. I don't like the toca logo on the head. Its this cheap because toca have discontinued this model. I know that the drum is currently on sale on the toca website for over three hundred dollars. (that is NOT a good deal at all.)I want to make a general point about these more traditional instruments: the rope tuning system is better - both more convenient and more musical - than the modern tuning systems that require a metal tool. There's a very simple weave pattern that you can find on you tube that allows you to fine tune the drum very easily indeed.

5Great sound!
By oavila
Bought this for my husband who wants to learn how to play. It's a heavy piece, but that doesn't bother the hubby who will just play it at home. It's got a great sound, and is lovely when you actually see it in your hands and in your home. My husband loves it and was very impressed with this gift.
