Well constructed but lacks comfort on extended hikes
By Paleo Man
I hike several days a week, year round, over rough mountain terrain. My good experiences with the Camelbak 1400 cu. in. military tactical H.A.W.G. led me to purchase a tactical Motherlode for use on long or cold weather day hikes, as well as for short overnight trips. The Motherlode is very well constructed, with excellent zippers and many useful pockets and compartments. I was quite disappointed, however, when I loaded it up and took it out on tough trails. Regardless of how the load was packed and the straps cinched up, the Motherlode tended to pull away from my body uncomfortably, especially when scrambling over rough terrain and rocks. I am 6'2" tall and weigh 175 lbs. I'm not sure exactly what the problem was, it just was not possible to make the pack fit comfortably and balance well with any kind of load. The pack is relatively heavy by itself, but even when loaded lightly it feels quite a bit heavier than it is.Finally, I bought a Camelbak Trizip model which was reputed to include the renowned Mystery Ranch suspension system and design. The Trizip is everything in terms of comfort on hikes that the Motherlode is not. The Motherlode would be an adequate pack for organizing and storing gear if only short travel on foot is needed. But the Trizip is much better balanced, and much more comfortable on extended hikes, and well worth the added expense

Great backpack (with a surprise)
By DigitalPasture
I'm an avid camper and hiker. I'm planning on doing a stint on the southern portion of the AT and I needed a pack lighter and smaller than my typical bag, but still big enough to hold all of my kit. After about two months of research, this is what I bought. For the money, I can't imagine finding something better at present. I looked carefully at both Blackhawk and Maxpedition. For my needs this bag is (nearly) perfect. I needed a bag that was somewhat rigid (accomplished by a piece of plastic behind the back padding), but without a frame to add weight. I also wanted a decent hydration bladder built in, Molle strapping and it must be comfortable. Check on all fronts. I did add several Molle pouches to the bag; a tear-off first aid kit, a deployment bag for my tent and a small accessory pouch for the things needed close at hand (phone, smokes, wallet, etc). I still need to buy another pouch to hold my stove and cook gear. There is a version of this bag that is slightly more expensive and has additional pockets, but I opted to customize it myself. The bag is something of a mystery to me. I put it on and it seems lighter than it should be loaded. I even put everything back into my old hiking bag and it certainly felt heavier than this one. I'm guessing this bag's suspension system is to praise. The straps are comfortable and seem quite durable. There are also no dangling straps, there are Velcro fold-overs that seem to work quite well. The only real gripe I have is the bottom of the bag does not have Molle, just a few strapping points. Good enough I guess.I have not taken this bag in the field yet so far as hiking, but I expect it to do very well from the few walks and trips it has accompanied me on thus far. It's kind of hard to get decent pics of this bag. I used both Google Images and YouTube (as well as the reviews here) to make my purchasing decision. The "surprise"? I bought my bag from the seller "palomo68". It arrived in perfect condition in a Staples box. I opened it and it had a tag on it and the hydration system still had the plastic shielding the bite nozzle. I opened the bag and in the interior mesh pocket I saw a piece of off-white or beige fabric. I pulled it out to examine it closer. It was a (thankfully unused) pair of military issue size 34 "tighty whities". It was good for a laugh and despite this, the bag showed no signs of use. I've kept it (tossing the undies) and will recommend the bag and the seller.

An excellent pack for deployment or civilian use
By T. Buckingham
I'm very happy with this pack. CamelBak's build quality is top-notch and is up to the demands of a military deployment, outdoor adventure, or just sprinting along on a sport bike (which is what I primarily use mine for). It's comfortable and will stow loads of gear securely. I've dressed mine up with several MOLLE pouches, such as the Voodoo Tactical MOLLE Utility Pouch for use on Tactical Vest and Tactical Molle Pocket Pouch Army Digital Camouflage, which give me more options to organize my gear and can be easily added or removed depending on my needs. You'll spend as much or more going my route as you would buying the more expensive Camelbak BFM - 100 oz/3.0L Foliage Green NSN 8465015174778, but you'll have the option of tailoring the pack to suit your needs on any given adventure. This is an excellent bag. You won't be disappointed.
