K&N 57i CAI for BMW m20 motor

This intake is made for the e30 models with six cylinder motors and fit my m20b25 perfectly. The instructions include other variations of the m20 motor as well. There is no heat shield with this kit. The included intake tube brings cold air from the front grill area directly to the filter, although in the case of my motor (build date of 10/92), the instructions for routing the tube didn't apply. So I "engineered" my own best route and how to secure the tube on each end. Otherwise the install instructions are excellent and all necessary hardware is included and is top quality. The adapter for the MAF meter is very good, but you do need to remove the studs and use the included bolts. Of course, you won't notice a big difference in horsepower or torque, but the motor does get more air, and the "whoosh" sound is invigorating on acceleration. Acceleration is improved, if only slightly. Haven't noticed any improvement in gas mileage. That may be a result of my foot mashing the accelerator more often to hear that wonderful intake sound. This isn't a mod that has to be done, but the benefits include dressing up the engine and a little more room in the engine bay after removing that huge OE filter box.

Great kit! Super easy install and make the engine bay look way better than having that big bulky restrictive air box. Car feels like it runs better now that it doesn't have to breath through a straw.

Difficult to install. No noticeable performance improvement.

Product arrived in an opened, shop-worn box, but all the parts were there. However, this particular unit was made in England, and came with British English installation instructions along with a UK tech support phone number. The instructions were vague, as were the illustrations. Photographs would have been more useful than the crude drawings. I eventually had to ditch the instructions and just figure out how to install it on my own. Installed, it looks great but there is no noticeable performance improvement. All things considered, I wish I'd paid a bit more for a Pipercross air intake.
