Very Good Boom Box Speakers

I am building a Boom Box with the Dayton Audio IO650B 6-1/2" Indoor/Outdoor Speaker Pair Black powered by the LP-2020A+ Lepai Tripath Class-T Hi-Fi Audio Mini Amplifier with Power Supply. I will construct a metal cage to attach the speakers and my iPod/Pad/Phone. This review is for both items.The speakers are well built with ABS cabinets and a firmly mounted grill. They weigh 7.5 pounds each, so I should easily be able to keep the boom box under my 20lb weight limit. The mounting brackets offer a secure hold and look like they will hold up under duress. The 5-way binding posts are nice, but do not allow full insertion of banana plugs. They fit in firm enough, are are easy to reinsert in my design if they do fall out. As for sound, bass is good (especially with my iPod EQ'd to my preference, Rock). The mids and highs, however, are really excellent. Very crisp and clear and detailed. I believe these will work very well for my build. Speaker placement is important, however. I ran these speakers off of my higher end amp spread about 10 feet apart and they lost a lot of their sonic qualities. When moved to six or four or even one foot apart they regained their tightness and bass.The Lepai is a really neat amp. It is hard to believe you can get this much quality sound out of such a small package. Fit and finish is very good and the wall wart power supply appears to be good quality, too. The sound is surprisingly warm and detailed even at higher volumes, although distortion becomes clearly evident after the 12 O'clock position. That said, this amp/speaker combo is more than enough to achieve "loud" but not "shaking" quality sound all throughout my 24' x 24' garage/man cave. The tone bypass is also a nice feature. There is a definite decrease in clarity and vibrance when the tone controls are on and they don't do a whole heck of a lot when they are adjusted, either. Again, I recommend using your players EQ to shape the sound to your liking. The speaker protection circuit DOES work, as I found out when I placed the hot banana plugs onto my metal topped desk. The music stopped, but no hiss or crackle or smoke. Yea--it saved me from myself! The Lepai would be a great bedroom or office/computer amp paired with just about any speaker (the Dayton's above are rated at 89db sensitivity).All in all, though, I believe this speaker amp combo is a little bit of a mismatch--the speakers can take far more than this amp can put out. The question: Do I get smaller smaller speakers or a larger amp? The answer: What do you think? So next payday I am going to get the Dayton Audio DTA-100a Class-T Digital Amplifier 50 WPC (Black) and give it a whirl. The Lepai will be a great backup/test amp for other projects.

We purchased these to replace a set of Bose speakers on our patio around the pool. These speakers have wonderful sound and are great for those pool parties. We love the way they install and are so easy to put up during the winter. Great stuff.
